The July Retreat will be a week early, and will be held at the Homedale Chapter House. The following note from Bonnie Fitzpatrick outlines the event:

We will have a short annual retreat this month...on the 13th & 14th at which time we will intern our sister and prioress, Kathleen Schuck.

The internment will be Friday night at dusk.  Please let me know if you invite other friends of Kathleen to join us.  We will gladly have them join us for a light meal, opening prayer, memory sharing,  and the internment at graveside before we return to the Chapter House for our retreat

Please bring your brevaries, water bottles (drinking and spray)  favorite pillow if staying overnight (please let us know ASAP so we can "book a bed" for you.) bug spray, easy food items for Friday night (salads...no BBQ!) and Saturday brunch/continental breakfast, and be prepared for some silence.  We are working on adoration through the night if possible,too. 

Since it is a short time, we will want to get as much spiritual enrichment as possible...

Sorry this is so late.......with all the confusion with our beloved Prioress's funeral plans, etc and our not connecting with OLV to see if we could use the Chapel for a Mass with Fr. Kelber here is what we've come up with!

Friday: - following the Funeral Dinner at OLV on Friday....not sure what time. Those who want can come out to Homedale for a get-together with Fr. Kelber, Les, Rozetta, Gayle, Peggy Backlund, and Margaret Warner. LADIES WILL BE IN THE DOMINICAN BUILDING AND THE MEN WILL BE WITH LES AT HIS HOUSE. So far, I know that Maria and John with Timmy are going to be staying Saturday night.

Saturday: Regular meeting times and potluck (Bring something wonderful to eat and share) BE READY TO START THE MEETING AT 11:00AM SHARP.....PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

A wonderful retreat

The Chapter retreat with Fr Brian Mullady OP was a great success!

Father gave us three presentations on the journey to union with God, based on St Theresa of Avila's Interior Castle and presented according to Garigou Lagrange's Three Ways of the Interior Life. It is clear to me that Father is a gifted teacher; the presentations were both concise and moving.

Saturday was a full day capped by dinner at the lovely home of our Subprioress Carolyn Reese. Father and a couple of intrepid members even sat outside in the 20 degree weather to enjoy cigars! Sunday we convened at the Chapter house for Mass and a potluck lunch, then sent Father to the airport to try and get him home before the snow hit Portland.

Speaking of which, snow has finally hit Boise today, with an expected snowfall of 4 to 8 inches, I've already got at least three inches outside my door. Yes, I stayed home today, beautiful and needed as it is, I don't want to travel in that stuff!

we're told to expect a good week of rain after today, for which we give thanks.

Retreat with Fr Brian Mullady OP

Boise, Idaho- Father Brian Mullady, O.P. will lead a daylong retreat at St Paul’s Catholic Student Center in Boise on Saturday, January 14th (1915 University Drive) hosted by the Third Order of St Dominic, Blessed Margaret of Castello Chapter.

Father Mullady is well known for preaching missions and retreats. He is the author of two books and numerous articles, writes the “Questions and Answers” column in Homiletic and Pastoral Review; is a theological consultant to the Institute on Religious Life, and an academician of the Catholic Academy of Science. In addition he is an adjunct professor at Holy Apostle Seminary in Cromwell Connecticut and has had seven series on Mother Angelica’s EWTN television network. He has a 12 CD set on Moral Theology

The day will start at 9AM with mass and morning prayer (from the Breviary) and run until 4:30. There is no charge for the retreat.

Retreat wrapup

The Blessed Margaret of Castello Chapter would like to thank Thelma Prisco OCDS for joining us today on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to speak to us on contemplative prayer and about the local Secular Discalced Carmelite group.

The pictures show our group quietly and attentively listening to Thelma. We know how to behave when needed, but the retreat also included that seemingly ubiquitous Dominican 'tradition' of eating and good company and discussion over meals. The last diehards are still at the Chapter House as I write, and will finally break up tomorrow; having been at it since Friday evening, when we started with a beautiful votive Mass of the Precious Blood in the Extrordinary Form at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Caldwell (I didn't take pictures, too busy with the chant!). Stephanie DeNinno and Carolyn Reese both did the consecration to the Precious Blood, which was beautiful. Followed by dinner at Mr V's in Caldwell, it was a late evening for all!

Good company, good food, sacraments, divine office, and serious discussion makes a well rounded event!

MAGDALENE RETREAT

SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2011, DOMINICAN CHAPTERHOUSE, HOMEDALE, IDAHO

The 7th Annual Mary Magdalene retreat at the Dominican Chapter House in Homedale will be on the subject of Contemplation in the Dominican and Carmelite traditions. We are blessed to have Thelma Prisco OCDS to speak to us about the Carmelite tradition, as well as the Secular Carmelite community in the Treasure Valley.

The retreat begins with Mass at 9:00 AM at the Chapter House, followed by breakfast (provided). The morning presentation will be on the Dominican tradition, and the afternoon presentation on the Carmelite tradition (lunch provided). Expect it to be very "interactive" with discussion. There will be a Holy Hour (3-4PM) and the retreat will close with Mass at 5:00 PM, followed by BBQ dinner (Please bring a salad, chips, or cookies to share both for the lunch and the BBQ dinner). Please call Stephanie (850-9688) for a count.

There is also an optional Friday evening mass as well. This will be at Our Lady of the Valley in Caldwell at 7 PM on July 15. It will be a Missa Cantata Votive Mass of the Precious Blood in the Extraordinary Form. Stephanie and Carolyn will do the Consecration to the Precious Blood. Dinner to follow at a local establishment TBD.

The Lay Dominicans in Idaho will be holding a retreat this coming October 16, 2010. The Retreat Master will be Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P., chaplain of Catholic Answers Live, a nationally syndicated Catholic radio program. The focus of the retreat will be on the importance of living your Catholic Faith. The Idaho-based Dominicans are affiliated with the Western Dominican Province at St. Albert’s Priory in Oakland, California. The local chapter, whose namesake is the 14th Century severely disabled saint, Margaret of Castello, meets on the third Saturday of each month at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Caldwell, Idaho. At their regular meetings, the Lay Dominicans meet in fellowship and prayer and study.

The Bl. Margaret of Castello Chapter will be holding its second annual Lenten Retreat March 20-22, at the Chapter House in Homedale, and St. Paul Catholic Church in Nampa. This retreat will include a pilgrimage trip from Homedale to St. Paul in Nampa, in order to gain the plenary indulgence granted during the year of St. Paul.

Unhappy life of the Sinner: and Happy Life

of him who loves God.

"The goods of this earth," says St. Vincent Ferrer, "do not enter the soul. They are waters which do not penetrate where there is thirst." The sinner may wear embroidered robes and the riches jewels; he may indulge the palate as much as he pleases; but his poor soul will be full of thorns and gall, and therefore with all his riches, pleasures, and amusements, you will see him always unhappy and ready to fly into a rage at every contradiction. He who loves God resigns himself to the divine will in adversity, and enjoys peace; but he who lives in opposition to the divine will, cannot conform to it, and therefore he has no means of tranquillizing the soul. The miserable man serves the devil, he serves a tyrant who repays him with gall and bitterness. The word of God can never fail. Because thou didst not serve the Lord thy God with joy and gladness, thou shalt server the enemy in hunger, and thirst, and nakeness, and in want of all things. [Dt. 28:47-48] What do not the vindictive suffer after they have gratified their resentment? The unchaste, after they have attained their wicked object? What do not the ambitious, and the avaricious, endure? Oh, how many are there, who, if they suffer for God as much as they suffer to bring themselves to their own damnation, would become great saints?

We have an unexpected visitor today and tomorrow. Br Peter, a member of the Dominican Studentate at St. Albert's Priory, Province of the Holy Name of Jesus, joined us this morning for a brief visit and will be joining us for 9:30 mass at Our Lady of the Valley, and a brief visit to the Chapter House in Homedale. we are thrilled ot have him, and hope for more visits like this (and we continue to pray for holy Dominincan vocations, especially ones who could be assigned here!).

Fourth annual Mary Magdalene retreat

The Dominican Laity of the Order of Preachers in Idaho is holding its fourth annual MAGDALENE RETREAT this year in lieu of the monthly chapter meeting. This retreat will be at St. Hubert's in Homedale on Saturday July 19 (although as usual there will be those who come on Friday, and those who stay until Sunday). We will continue with St. Alphonsus Ligouri's work which was the basis of the Good Friday retreat. we will have contemplative prayer, go to mass, and share meals together.

Please join us as we consider the life of St. Mary Magdalene and how we can follow her example in her true role in the life of Christ as Apostle to the Apostles, as well as honor our departed brethren, Gwen McGarvey OPL (2004), James Schuck OPL (2006), and Janet O'Leary OPL (2007), may God grant them eternal rest. She had profaned everything and she could only present the ruins of herself before God. Thus she enters without saying a word and leaves in the same fashion. The entire mystery is in her heart, and her silence, which is an act of faith and of humility, is also the last effort of a soul that is overflowing and can do no more.

Of Friendship in Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ loved souls, and he has transmitted this love to us, which is the very basis of Christianity. No true Christian, no living Christian, can be without a fragment of this love that circulates in our veins like the very blood of Christ. From the moment we love, whether it be in youth or in middle age, as a father or as a husband, as a son or as a friend, we want to save the soul we love, that is to say, give it, at the price of our own life, truth in the faith, virtue in grace, peace in redemption. God at last, God known, God loved, God served, there is that love of souls that adds itself to all the others, and which, far from destroying them, exalts and transforms them until it makes of them something divine, however mortal they be in themselves. And, moreover, the love of souls leads to friendship when one has been, near a poor fallen creature, the instrument of the light that reveals her form and which gives back to her her own dignity, this sublime healing of a death that should have been eternal sometimes inspires in two souls an indefinable attraction, born of the happiness given and the happiness received. And if natural sympathy is joined onto this movement that comes from on high, there forms from all these divine chances into the same hearts an attachment that would have no name on earth, if Jesus Christ himself had not said to his disciples: “I have called you my friends.” This then is friendship. It is friendship such as God made man and dying for his friends conceived it. But still, amongst these souls with whom Jesus Christ lived and died, there was one who was especially favoured. He loved them all, but he loved some more than others. It was there, in this world, the summit of human and divine affections; nothing had prepared the world for it, and the world would only see again an obscure image in the holiest and most celestial friendships.
