Smyrna

My Microsoft Windows update came today, posted from Smyrna, TN.

Smyrna... best not forget:

The Turkish monument at Afion Karahissar for the victory and extermination of their enemies.

Uh, that would be us, folks...

  1. There's an interesting wiki article on Smyrna, itself a commentary on a long and bloody history that could almost be a metaphor for the current times:

The hard thing, the thing most troubling me is how to be faithful to Christian witness while being fully aware that there are people out there who want to kill me and mine just because we are who we are. Finding the balance point is not an easy task. Loving one's enemy while keeping him from sticking the knife in your back, doing good to him while he's trying to blow you up is a hard balancing act.

  3. Um... and I just reloaded Windows Vista today. If my office is a smoldering ruin tomorrow, you know why.

  4. Let's not forget the mutual expulsion of Turks (i.e., Muslims) from Greece during this distressing year of 1922.

  5. I found this discussing the 1922 Lausanne Peace Treaty; it doesn't speak to the details, however.
